Multi-million pound regeneration plans

CASTLE Point's regeneration plans for the next five years have just been revealed in a new document - and are intended to be the beginning of a half a billion pound regeneration programme.

The Castle Point Regeneration Framework, is a statement of intent by the Castle Point Regeneration Partnership.

Regeneration projects are being considered across the borough, including:

  • Revitalising Canvey Island Town Centre and Hadleigh High Street
  • Delivering the Building Schools for the Future programme and developing a vocational centre on Canvey Island
  • Enhancing the borough's industrial estates
  • Creating modern sports accommodation and other community facilities
  • Improving access to the RSPB's West Canvey Marshes
  • Continuing the improvement works on Canvey seafront
  • Improving traffic movement throughout the borough
  • Developing a primary health care centre in Benfleet, in addition to the one being developed on Canvey

Projects are focused around the partnership's priorities which are:

  • Employment and economic growth
  • Town centres
  • Education and skills
  • Environment
  • Transport
  • Planning for housing growth
  • Health
  • Leisure and the 2012 Olympics

Cllr Pam Challis, chairman of the Regeneration Partnership said: "This is an ambitious regeneration programme, but we believe Castle Point deserves these improvements so we will be fighting tooth and nail to get them.

"Our priorities are clear and are based on the views expressed to us by the community. By setting our plans and priorities in a document like this, we are in a better position to bid for funding from the Government and our partner agencies. However the majority of the funding needs to come from private investment by businesses and our action plan will consider exactly how we go about attracting the backing we need."

The full Regeneration Framework will look at regeneration to 2021, but the first phase of the delivery programme detailed in the new document runs until 2013. A detailed action plan for the next three years based on this framework will be available for comment this summer.

The Regeneration Partnership includes Castle Point Borough Council, Essex County Council, the RSPB, Government representatives and regional regeneration bodies like Thames Gateway South Essex.
