REGENERATION IN ACTION - SEAFRONT IMPROVEMENTS

A LOCAL businessman has praised the work being carried out on Canvey seafront, which he feels "can only be good for Canvey".

Mike Grice runs the Welcome Hut cafe on the seafront and is also a Canvey resident.

He said: "In the long term in can only be good for Canvey as a whole and for my business in turn. The more they do the better it is. It is going to tidy it right up - it is going to look nice."

Work started on the seafront last Thursday, beginning phase one of a comprehensive refurbishment programme.

Improvements ordered by the Castle Point Regeneration Partnership include:

  • Refurbishment of the paddling pool by the Concorde Cafe
  • Refurbishment of the bandstand
  • Creation of a new patio area by the Welcome Hut cafe
  • Landscaping improvements
  • New litter bins and benches

The programme of works was subject to extensive consultation, including an exhibition of the plans at the Castle Point Show. More than 100 people completed consultation forms to help select the right street furniture for the seafront.

Cllr Pam Challis, Leader of Castle Point Borough Council and chairman of the Regeneration Partnership, said: "It is very exciting to see work starting on the seafront, because the area is a regeneration priority for both the council and the partnership.

"These improvements will make a big difference to the appearance of the area and help make Canvey seafront an attractive place to visit.

"However these works will simply be the start of a comprehensive refurbishment of Canvey seafront. By working with existing businesses and attracting new businesses to the area, we intend to regenerate the seafront into a place Canvey residents can be justifiably proud."

The Regeneration Partnership - which includes Castle Point Borough Council, Essex County Council, the RSPB and regional regeneration bodies like Thames Gateway South Essex - is carrying out the work with funding from the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) and the East of England Development Agency (EEDA).

The first phase is scheduled for completion by the end of April.
